Using Tile to Define Spaces
In this example the different floor tiles create a separate area for the tub; the same tile is used in the shower pan. The diagonal border between the tile and the other flooring leads directly to the vanity, effectively partitioning the spaces but unifying them with repeated materials.
Tip: With this kind of installation, be sure to plan the angles and lay out the tile carefully so that you don't end up with tiny bits of tile in really visible places.

Similarly, the pebble tile in this bath delineates the area for the shower and frames each side of the shower opening. The pebbles have the bonus of adding texture underfoot.
Tip: When considering pebble tile, remember that much more grout will be visible than with standard tile. Talk with your tile setter about how much grout to expect and whether there's a choice for more or less. The answers might influence the color of grout you select.

One-of-a-Kind Treatments
You can always pull out all the stops and let your tile cascade down the wall and spill onto the floor. This particular installation required routering out a piece of bamboo flooring to create an opening for a pool of bubble tile.
Tip: Choose your floor tile colors and textures carefully, plan your pattern ahead of time and be ready to make changes on the fly once your tile setter arrives. Experienced tile setters will help you achieve the look you want and point out the areas where you have a choice to make regarding cuts and the size of grout lines.

Decorative Borders
Tile can also create a decorative border around a room. In this case the border continues under the corner bathtub, drawing the eye to the tub. In a bath with cabinets and more fixtures, this might not work as well since the border would be interrupted.

Tile borders can also follow the walls, jump into showers or toilet rooms, and skip around the fronts of vanities. In this photo a black border of 2- by 2-inch hexagonal tiles is set two full tiles off the wall.
Tip: Don't forget heat registers or grilles when you do this. Either run the tile border through them or relocate them so that the register is outside the line.

Tile "Rugs"
Floors can also be arranged to create a tile framework in the center of a room that mimics the look of a rug. This can be achieved with a mosaic tile border, filled with more field tile.

It's also possible to fill the area inside the border with a secondary tile pattern, which creates visual interest and texture.

Powder rooms are ideal locations for a full-floor, detailed tile design, but having designs laid out precisely in such a small space can be difficult. Work carefully with your tile installer to make sure the pattern turns out exactly how you planned.

You can also plan a powder-room-size tile design in the middle of a larger room. In this photo the Ann Sacks tile installation is a throw rug look-alike in a bath with otherwise uniform lines and colors.
